Let me address the elephant in the room: There is insufficient scientific evidence to support the claim that facial massages improve skin health. Now that that's out of the way, I can personally rave about how soothing a gentle self-massage of my face feels. And at the end of the day, we should do things that make us feel good, right?
Several types of facial massages — lymphatic drainage, shiatsu, acupressure — involve different techniques. However, an at-home face massage doesn't need anything fancy.
Here's a list of massage tips in no particular order. Feel free to mix and match these steps in an order that feels refreshing to you. Just be sure to clean your face and hands first!
  • Use a circular motion to rub your fingers into your temples.
  • Use your palms and fingertips to massage the sides of your face, starting at your chin and moving up toward your forehead. Then, slide your hands back down.
  • Press and glide your ring fingers into your brow bone. Move from the inner to the outer corner. Then, do the same movement underneath your eyes.
  • Press down firmly on the space between your eyebrows for a few seconds. Then, continue pressing as you make clockwise and counterclockwise movements.
  • Use your index and middle fingers to press under your cheekbones. Start at the center of your face and move toward your temples.
  • For a stronger effect, use your knuckles to press into your face. Start at your nose and move them across your cheeks to your ears.
  • Use a circular motion to massage the area under your earlobes.
  • Use the outside of your pinky fingers to press into your neck, starting at the top and moving downward.
  • Use your fingertips to gently tap all around your face. Then, gently pinch the more fleshy areas of skin.
I'll admit that my skin is looking extra supple and replenished lately. Is it because of my not-that-expensive cleansers, toners, serums, and moisturizers? The effects of my gua sha-ing? A combination? Who's to say? I look good (IMO) and feel good, and that's all that matters to me.
