Beach Beat: CDC says outbreak's over; USDA says it's 'engaging' industry; what will chicken producers say?

By Coral Beach on Feb 24, 2019 12:05 am

Opinion I've always been partial to shades of gray, possibly because we didn't get a color TV until I was almost 9 years old. That's when I discovered that the black, white and gray stripes on the test pattern were in living color. As seductive as those colors were, my fascination with black and white,...

EFSA: Stricter Salmonella rules for hens could reduce human infections

By Joe Whitworth on Feb 24, 2019 12:01 am

Setting stricter targets for Salmonella in laying hens at the farm level could cut the number of salmonellosis cases from that source in half, according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). European Union countries are required to reduce the proportion of laying flocks infected with certain types of Salmonella to 2 percent. EFSA experts...

Motivational quote of the week

SparkPeopleHello from Sparkguy

Hi Everyone

I hope you had a great week! I had a good one. My milestone this week was to drive about 45 minutes to my first in-person business meeting since my surgery. It brought back memories putting on the same shoes and pants for the first time since the day I had my brain seizure. This was a fun meeting catching up with someone a couple of years ahead of me in college who has had a remarkable career and now is a top executive at a major tech company in the SF Bay Area.

Here is the motivational quote of the week:

The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty. -- Winston Churchill

Here is an image I created with the quote:

I'm a big fan of this quote because I will admit to being at least partly a pessimist when I was younger. I often was quicker to see the negatives in a situation before looking at the positives.

When you are able to transform into a stronger optimist, you see the world in an entirely new light as this quote suggests.

I don't believe you can "flip the switch" from being a pessimist to an optimist right away. Instead, I think this is something you can work on one small step and one small decision at a time. I do think it helps when you really know what's most important to you in life. I talk about that on this blog if you haven't seen it.

Let me know what you think about all of this on today's blog.

By the way, some people have asked about the surgery I'm recovering from. If you haven't seen this, here is the original story from last October about my brain seizure caused by a brain tumor that was successfully removed and was not cancerous -- I'm grateful to be here doing my best to motivate you!
