Stressed? Got a tricky problem to solve? Take a shot of shuteye. Researchers at the University of Michigan found that when presented with tests that were deliberately designed to be stressful and difficult, people who had recently snoozed for an hour have a much higher threshold for frustration than non-nappers, and they invested twice as much time trying to solve a complex task. The study's author, Jennifer Goldschmied, PhD, suggested that the longer you're awake, the more your emotional control is sapped - even if you're not feeling tired. Thirty minutes should be almost as effective as an hour's nap, but there's more than one way to recharge your mind. |
