Body inclusivity meets sustainability meets athleisure
what's got us buzzing
Body inclusivity meets sustainability meets athleisure
Some years ago, a friend told me about this "cool new brand that makes leggings out of water bottles." I went to their site later that day and was impressed to see models of all body types (even as recently as 2018 it was rare to see models that weren't a size 0).

The company was Girlfriend Collective and since then I've watched them go from an indie brand to a mainstream, must-have clothing company. In fact, they use a variety of recycled items to make their clothes, including fishing nets, fabric scraps, and other plastic waste. They're part of the "slow fashion" movement, which puts a heavy emphasis on sustainability and transparency.

I dig Girlfriend Collective's minimalistic vibe and their bold embrace of off-looking colors. I've been buying their clothes for years and find that virtually everything is well made and lasts a long time. My one word of caution when buying Girlfriend Collective gear is to read the reviews for tips about sizing. I find all of their product lines are sized a little differently. (On that note, the Luxe Leggings seem to be made for very tall people, aka they didn't work on my 5-foot-5-inch frame at all.)

Until Dec. 9, they'll be running a 35% off sale *sitewide.* And for a limited time, many of their styles will be available in Lollipop, a festive red hue. Shop now at GirlfriendCollective.com.

You're up
Swing and a miss
This story is about my wife, Jess, who back in the day wanted to own a pair of fabulously cool new style roller boots. She planned to wear them at the super fashionable local roller disco, this being the early 1980s when roller discos were The BIGGEST Thing. I think she spent many hours daydreaming about how she would zoom and spin beneath the glitterball and lights as Wham! or Duran Duran echoed around the hall, perhaps even catching the eye of a young Simon Le Bon lookalike.
However, come Christmas morning, she had opened all but one present and noticed a definite lack of colorful roller boots. Even now, decades later, the disappointment of tearing open the last wrapped gift to find a pair of grody red leather and metal strap-on roller skates still bites. They were such an affront to her that she refused to wear them, let alone suffer unlivedownable shame at the roller disco. I hear about it every year.
