Wellness trends to look out for in the new year
what's got us buzzing
Wellness trends to look out for in the new year
We've done the research. We've spent hours scouring the depths of the internet. We've heard from industry experts. The verdict is in. *drum roll, please*

We predict the following five trends will dominate the wellness world in 2023:

  • Wearables aren't going anywhere. They're only going to improve health and fitness tracking from here on out. Also on our radar: insideables, aka health monitors you ingest that track you from the inside out.
  • Personalization will take priority. Everyone's needs are different, but they're all important. Customizing the ways we eat, exercise, and take supplements will revolutionize our health.
  • At-home beauty treatments. We can thank TikTok for making DIY beauty and skin care more accessible. Brands and doctors are listening, and we're ready to reap the benefits.
  • Stepping away from our phones. As we recently covered in our Q&A with Larissa May, more celebs and youth are breaking up with social media and tech. This trend is only going to continue as folks prioritize their mental well-being.
  • Alternative ways to heal. People will seek out alternative ways to boost their energy levels, connect, heal, and let go through psychedelic therapy and other natural practices.

There we have it, folks! Only time will tell what we get right, but you should know that senior newsletter editor Ashley Sepanski and I predicted the 2022 sexual health and wellness trends last year and knocked it out of the park. I don't want to say mark these words … but mark these words.

Those are our predictions, but what do you see shaping health and wellness in 2023? Share your ideas, big and small, or tip us off at wellnesswire@healthline.com.

tl;dr: The top 2023 wellness trend predictions include more wearables, personalized health routines, at-home beauty, digital time-outs, and alternative healing.

Bala Bangles
Bala Bangles
The fitness trend I couldn't have predicted? The return of wrist and ankle weights. When Bala Bangles first hit the market, I scoffed. (I'm noticing this trait is almost always a precursor to a big slab of humble pie.) But then I swallowed my pride, put on my Jane Fonda leotard, and gave them a shot.
I'm a lift heavy and run fast kinda gal, and these weights targeted every weak point of what I thought was a rock solid fitness regimen (remember that humble pie I mentioned?). The beauty of the bangles is how they add adjustable intensity to any workout while targeting those hard-to-reach small muscle groups. You can use them to turn up the heat on arm circles by donning half-pound bangles or test your endurance and speed by attaching bangles to your ankles.
Ultimately, these get a (weary-armed) thumbs up from me. The straps are comfortable, the weight is adjustable, and the bangles come in a handful of eye-catching colors.

Best and worst states for wellness in 2022

Best and worst states for wellness in 2022
What if where you lived had a big impact on your lifestyle and well-being? With this theory in mind, vitamin and supplement company Life Extension set out to uncover the best and worst U.S. states for wellness in 2022 based on three factors:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data on physical and mental health
  • Google Trends data on wellness related topics over the last year
  • National Park Service data on access to parks and nature

The results? They're fascinating.

Sunlight will boost your well-being, and this report proves it. California came in hot as the No. 1 state for wellness, followed by Arizona in second place and Florida in third. The worst place? Alabama, likely due to its lack of national park access and accessibility to integrative health practices like meditation and yoga. The South is home to four of the worst states on the list, too. There's *a lot* to cover (50 states worth, to be exact), so click here to read the rest of the findings.

No matter where you live, know that you have the power to improve your well-being. Start off by boosting the quality of your physical and mental wellness, sleep, and nutrition. Try these 8 daily habits to boost your mental health or 25 simple tips to make your diet healthier.

Not helping? It's easier said than done, especially if you have kids, family, or work commitments, but consider moving to a location that better supports the life you want to live. That's what I did two years ago, and I've never been happier or healthier. This doesn't have to mean settling halfway across the country. Research has found that even living a little closer to water can boost well-being.

Let's chat: Where does your state rank on the list? Does your experience align with the results? Tell us at wellnesswire@healthline.com.

Health Hype Answer
Is scent genetic?
Yes!
Add this to the list of things I didn't know: Your genetics affect the way you smell and your sense of smell. (Yes, personal hygiene plays an important role, too.) This is part of the reason why pheromones are so powerful –– we can be attracted to another person strictly based on how well we jive with their B.O.
