One step at a time

SparkPeopleHello from Sparkguy

Hello Everyone

I hope you had a good week! If you missed it last week, my blog on gratitude got a good response with many great comments. Here are two comments:

Boy did you hit the nail on the head for me with your positive and negative filter. I've always considered myself a fighter... then a survivor... and then at some point I just got tired and I can clearly see the effects of the victim mentality. I have so much to be thankful for but the joy isn't experienced because of my filter. I am going to put forth greater effort in switching out my filter and remind myself constantly of how fortunate I am despite the challenges.

This is such an awesome blog that I am sending it to my husband, who is the kind of person who can find the negative in almost any situation! I know it's a conditioned response from many past experiences but I keep trying to tell him he needs to look for the good, not the bad. Maybe this will help him understand because you've so clearly explained the concept! Thank you and I continue to pray for your complete recovery!

Here is the blog if you missed it.

I have a fun short story this week showing how small steps literally led to a fun milestone in my recovery. As I mentioned, I am living our program starting off with the smallest fitness workouts even if they are only a minute or two at a time. When we were stuck inside from the California wildfire smoke, this included jogging up and down my stairs inside the house.

I've also done bodyweight squats to re-gain strength and the balance board and mini-trampoline to re-build my strong balance. Practicing what I preach, I've been very consistent and today is Day 29 in a row of doing at least 10 minutes of fitness (my average is up to 30 minutes per day, but that includes light activities like stretching). I've had zero setbacks with the recovery so far.

I was ready for a big milestone challenge this week: a "real" hike.

This hike included a fairly significant decent and then ascent. It was exciting to see that as a result of the combination of these specific exercises plus the consistency, I was easily able to complete this milestone and my legs were completely prepared for the challenge, so I didn't need to exert myself very much on the 30-minute hike.

This was a joyous moment in the journey to get back to feeling normal (or better than normal now)!

A next big step is a visit to the doctor this week. I hope I'll be able to get my driver's license back in part so I can help my wife with the kids :).

If you are interested, I put a 45-second video of the hike on this blog.

What small steps can you continue taking during the holiday season to stay on track while still having fun?
