| | | Is this why your back hurts? | Back pain can range in intensity from dull aches to shooting pains radiating to other body parts. It can limit your ability to stand up straight and impact mobility in various ways. Back pain is considered chronic when it's been present for more than 3 months. | There are many causes of back pain. In rare cases, it may be due to a fungal or bacterial infection of the spine, cancer, or a kidney stone. But here are some of the most common causes: | - strained muscles or other injury
- structural problems (e.g., disc injuries, sciatica, misaligned posture)
- arthritis
- osteoporosis
| Plenty of remedies may relieve your pain, such as medications, physical therapy, and yoga. However, finding the right treatment ultimately depends on the root cause. | Speaking with a doctor can lead you to a proper diagnosis and the most effective care plan. You might also need a physical exam or other tests if your back pain lasts longer than 2 weeks and/or you experience any of these co-occurring symptoms: | - loss of bowel or bladder control
- numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs
- intense, constant pain that gets worse at night
- unexplained weight loss
- a throbbing sensation in your abdomen
- fever
