| We get SO many emails from readers who don't know where to start creating a nutrition plan that works for them. Many of them live with multiple health conditions and need to follow two or more sets of differing guidelines at the same time. Or their health situation is unique in a way that makes it nearly impossible to find the right information online. Sound familiar? If so, it may be beneficial to work with a dietitian who can give you individualized advice. | Honestly, just about everyone could benefit from working with this type of nutrition expert! So today, we're giving the floor to a registered dietitian herself — Kelli McGrane. Below, she gives expert advice on how to find one who matches your needs. | | | | Hope this helps! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik February 22, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | I would love to work with a dietitian! What should I look for when choosing? | | A: | A registered dietitian (RD) is a board certified nutrition expert who can work with you to create a nutrition plan that's tailored to your needs and lifestyle. (And heads-up: Nutritionists are not the same as dietitians.) Similar to other healthcare professionals, dietitians tend to specialize in certain aspects of health. For example, if you live with diabetes or prediabetes, it may be most helpful to work with an RD who is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
Whether you're looking to eat healthier, lose weight, or get to the bottom of pesky digestive issues, I'd make sure that you're choosing an RD whose interests match your health needs and goals. It can also be helpful to look for someone who shares your cultural or ethnic background and understands how your culture may influence your diet.
You can usually find this information on a dietitian's website (if they have one) or by contacting their office.
You'll also want to consider whether you want to meet virtually or IRL and how much you're willing (and able) to spend. If your insurance plan covers nutrition counseling, it's worth trying to find an RD who's in-network.
Many private-practice RDs offer a free initial consultation, which is a great opportunity to get a feel for whether their personality vibes with yours.
Finally, if you have any concerns about an RD's credentials, you can verify them by doing a quick search on the Commission on Dietetic Registration's website. | | | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
