Exercise is No Longer a Four-Letter Word
CTYONIT

Once upon a time I referred to exercise as the longest 4-letter word. My years of exercise experience have been bittersweet. For some reason, exercise never seemed to give me the results I was looking for. As I think about it now, I chuckle to think that the results I was expecting included erasing all my poor eating habits. If only...

Recently, I have become aware of the results that exercise can bring. I have a few new-ish health troubles that have sent me to quite a few doctors lately. Each time I have an appointment they ask me about my exercise habits. My reply seems like no big deal to me, but the doctors have responded in curious ways. One congratulated and high-fived me. One said "Wow that is faster than I run!" Another said, "Very impressive." The tech who did my stress test asked for a picture with me to put on their board. I did not expect such reactions--it felt good.

I guess what I am trying to say is that my exercise results show more on the inside of my body than the outside. I do not have very defined muscles or a sculpted look, nor do I send out athletic vibes. I am okay with that because as I age with a tad more wisdom than I had decades earlier, I can see that I was exercising for vanity. I wasn't interested in making my body healthier, I just wanted to fit into whatever new style was all the rage.

I have been sidelined from exercise since my surgery on May 1 (walking was just recently added back.) On Wednesday I am going to ask my doctor for the green light to start strength training. If you have been reading my blog for a while you may remember that I truly dislike strength training. It is just so boring and repetitive (pun not intended). Because of my strong feelings against it I have decided to write an Advantage Card. My goal is to read it at least twice a day so I can remember why exercise is so important.

Advantages of Exercise

1. Strengthen my muscles and bones
2. Stay limber
3. Reduce stress
4. Motivate me to stay on my eating plan
5. Reduce boredom
6. Excuse to ditch cleaning my house
7. Get more Me Time
8. Improve my health
