We can think of a few reasons …

| There are many things I love about winter: going to bed early, hearing the rain fall, wearing beanies. But above all else, I love eating soup. Butternut squash, potato leek, coconut chickpea — I love them all! | One perplexing thing I've noticed about eating soup is that I fill up much faster than expected, no matter what kind I'm eating. I always expect to need more food afterward, but in reality a bowl can often be enough for a meal. To help us understand this culinary mystery, we invited Kirsten Seele, a registered dietitian, back. She shares her theories below. | | | | Eat up, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik December 19, 2024 • 4 min read | | | | | | | Q: | Why do I feel fuller faster when I eat soup? | | A: | The components of soup that contribute to the feeling of fullness depend on the type of soup consumed. In general, the components would include: - water from the broth
- bulk and volume from the veggies (onions, broccoli, carrots)
- fiber from whole grains and legumes (wild rice, barley, beans, lentils)
- carbs from the noodles
- protein from meat or dairy products (chicken, beef, milk, cheese)
You also may find yourself slurping at times. Inhaling air can cause a feeling of fullness (or bloating). Not only can this cause discomfort, but it might "broth-er" the people sitting next to you!
Soup can be a filling, nutritious, and delicious way to start a meal, especially as we head into the fall and winter months. If you're working on increasing the nutritional quality of your diet or managing your weight, adding a small bowl of soup before a meal could be an idea worth exploring.
Eating soup first can help you feel fuller and be more mindful of your portions during the rest of the meal. This can be a helpful strategy at restaurants but can even be done at home.
Many people need help getting enough whole grains and vegetables daily, and some people even need more protein. Soup can be a "souper" way to increase all of these components with one single dish. Some soups may be higher in fat, calories, or sodium, so you do want to be considerate of the type of soup and ingredients. For example, you may want to opt for broth-based soups rather than cream-based soups.
I'm feeling dorky today, so I'm going to end today's segment with a little joke.
Why was the duck mad when he got his soup at the restaurant?
Because they forgot his quackers! | | | Kirsten Seele, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
