In a Nutshell
A big part of my job is studying nutrition research, so I guess it's no surprise that I pay close attention to my own diet. My current focus is protein. I aim for at least 100 grams per day, evenly spread out over breakfast, lunch, and dinner (with some scoops of peanut butter in between).
Before this more health-conscious era, I used to eat a fried egg on an English muffin every morning. But while an egg packs a diversity of important nutrients, it only has about 7 grams of protein — a far cry from the 30 grams I'm now shooting for. All this to say, upon learning that a cup of Greek yogurt has somewhere in the neighborhood of 22 grams of protein, my breakfast strategy was forever changed. Below, I share my recipe for a nutrient- and protein-packed Greek yogurt bowl.

Greek yogurt breakfast bowls — say less
what's got us buzzing
Greek yogurt breakfast bowls — say less
Despite my focus on nutrition, eating food that tastes good is still my number one priority. That is to say, I will never eat food simply for its nutritional components. This is perhaps why I'm so enthusiastic about Greek yogurt bowls. They're packed with flavor and texture, and they somehow check both savory and sweet boxes at the same time.
A secondary nutrition goal of mine is to eat 30 types of plants a week, based on 2018 research that suggests this may lead to optimal gut health. So while I'm 100% on board with eating a bowl of only Greek yogurt, I love adding a variety of toppings to help me hit this goal. Here's my go-to melange:
  • 1 cup of unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts
This bowl of goodness serves up roughly 33 grams of protein, plus a bunch of other nutrients. For instance, Greek yogurt boasts a significant amount of vitamin B12, riboflavin (B2), and selenium, while sunflower seeds are a great source of copper and vitamin E. The hemp hearts add a dose of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. And don't forget the berries, which are antioxidant powerhouses. I could go on and on about the many nutritional benefits of these foods, but you get the picture.
As far as fullness goes, this meal really hits the spot. I find I easily make it to lunch without needing a snack. On the other hand, when I ate an egg for breakfast, I would often find myself scavenging around the kitchen at 10:30 a.m.
All in all, I'm a big fan of Greek yogurt bowls. And I think you might be too.
