| "How do I eat enough protein every day?" This is one of the most common questions we get from readers. While the official daily recommended intake of protein for adults is only 50 grams, certain groups — older adults, those trying to build muscle mass, and pregnant people, for example — need much more than that. | Protein shakes are a common "solution" to this problem. After all, what could be easier than tossing a couple spoonfuls of protein powder and a liquid into the blender? Easy and nutritious, yes. But is there a limit to the number of protein shakes you should put away per day? Also yes. Today, Lindsey Mahar, a registered dietitian at Healthline and Wellos Coach, is here to explain why. | | | | Bottoms up, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik October 3, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | Powered by | | | | | | Q: | How many protein shakes is it safe to drink in a day? | | A: | While protein shakes can be a quick and easy way to boost your protein intake, it's not a great idea to rely on them. Consuming most, if not all, of your protein from food sources is the best way to ensure that you're acquiring the variety of nutrients found in a well-balanced diet.
If you're not able to reach your protein requirements with food alone, try to limit protein shakes to 1 to 2 shakes per day at the most. With any more than that, you could be displacing valuable nutrients found in naturally occurring foods. As far as how much protein is optimal to add to each shake, that depends on your age, weight, activity level, health status, and other factors. However, according to a 2018 study, a 150-lb adult who has the goal of building muscle should shoot for around 27 grams of protein per meal, and eat four meals per day.
BTW, you can also make protein shakes with food sources instead of with premade protein powders, which are often high in added sugars.
