Here are a few tips to stay on top of your blood sugar levels when you are out and about: - Set a reminder to pack your glucometer and any medications prescribed by your doctor.
- Check your blood glucose more often since your eating habits and activity level may be different from your usual routines.
- Plan ahead for balanced meals and snacks:
- Pack healthy snacks from home if you can. If it's not possible, stop by a grocery store or convenience store for simple items like cheese sticks, nuts, or hard-boiled eggs.
- Look up a restaurant's menu before heading there. Often you can find the carb and calorie content on their website or you can research the ingredients in a calorie-counting app if the restaurant doesn't post that kind of information online.
- If faced with mainly high carb items, try to have smaller portions. Box half up for later or see if a travel-mate will split it with you.
- If pasta or pizza is the only thing on the menu, you can balance it out by asking to add a protein and a vegetable. Maybe have one slice of pizza and add a side salad.
- If your travels involve a lot of sitting, be active when you can by parking farther away, taking the stairs, or walking at the airport.
