How do you shake off a bad mood?
I've always had a tough time bouncing back after something ruins my mood. It doesn't even take much, either. The littlest thing (like an annoying text or a hiccup in my routine) can seriously throw off my whole day or night.
You might call it a temper tantrum, but I genuinely struggle with emotional regulation. Like, I *want* to be able to just pick back up, dust off my shoulders, and move on … but it's really, really hard!
I talked with my therapist about this, and she had some solid advice. (This is why she makes the big bucks.) Basically, she suggested three ways to approach the situation:
  • practicing acceptance and allowing myself to be upset rather than feeling guilty for it
  • coping skills like changes in sensory input that get me out of my head and into my body
  • leaning into the self-care strategies that I *know* can — and do — help me feel better
Next time, I'm going to crawl under a weighted blanket and cuddle my cat for an hour to see if it helps. I can also take a cold shower or hold ice cubes to escape my brain and focus on a different physical sensation for a bit. This *might* help me get one step closer to moving on with my day.
But if my plans aren't urgent, I could also just give myself permission to bail, take care of myself, and then pick back up where I left off tomorrow. I love an excuse to stay inside anyway.
