Be a Nice-Sayer

In the past few weeks, twice I've noticed internet trolls rearing their ugly heads and it just makes me sad.

First, was the Royal Wedding. While there was plenty of coverage talking about how beautiful Meghan looked and how she was making history as a biracial American feminist marrying into the Royal Family, there were still tons of naysayers.

"Her dress was so plain."
"She hardly wore any makeup"
"Why didn't she get her dress tailored?"

Who cares? Why can't we just be happy for this woman on her special day? Regardless of what she wore, people would have been making negative comments from behind their computer screens because they feel so powerful when there are no repercussions.

The second instance was American Idol. My favorite ended up winning the whole thing, but the girl who took third had a ton of fans who started ripping into the American Idol Instagram, Facebook etc, saying it was rigged, that she couldn't sing, that she was ugly etc. Like the day should be the happiest day of her life and the poor girl has to see all these terrible mean comments saying she didn't deserve it.

Gosh, the Internet is a mean place. Whatever happened to if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?

Which brings me to SparkPeople.

In my almost 7 years on SparkPeople, I think I've had a total of 3-4 negative comments. And each one hurt me, but thankfully, I had sooooo many positive comments to outweigh them that I could hardly stay upset for long. I am so thankful for all of you and your support. And I'm very aware that I don't offer enough support to all of you back. So please know that if you ever NEED support, please send me a SparkMail!

And if you have received negative comments, or have felt less than spectacular based on something you saw or read online, remember that the Internet (SparkPeople excluded) is not what you should base your happiness on. Comparing your journey to anyone else is unrealistic.

It's like my favorite Dr. Seuss quote:

"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go."

Choose to be happy. Don't listen to the naysayers. Be a nice-sayer.
