| I've done Dry January twice before, and it's certainly not easy — especially when you're in social situations where drinking alcohol is the main activity. Although my alcohol-free periods were finite, I did appreciate the benefits of staying sober. | When a person decides that they want to eliminate or cut down on alcohol, it's often referred to as going "sober curious." Whether it's a monthlong experiment or for the long haul, many emotions and questions may arise. What do I want out of this? Will my friends pressure me into drinking? What if I get an urge to give in to temptation? There is a lot that we can talk about around alcohol consumption — which we will do in future newsletters. | For today, let's start with tackling an easy question: What are good alcohol-free cocktails you can drink? Lucky for you, we just hosted an in-office mocktail test, and I'm eager to share our favorites! | | | | Have a good start to your month. Kenny Thapoung Managing Newsletter Editor | | | Written by Kenny Thapoung February 2, 2025 • 2.5 min read | | | | | | | Mocktail recipes for the sober curious | Despite failing Dry January during the first week, I did commit to a "damp" January: I didn't drink alcohol during the week, and I drank at least one nonalcoholic beverage before imbibing. | Nothing in my life changed drastically, not that I expected it to. But I did learn one thing: If I start with a mocktail or alcohol-free beer, I'm less likely to overconsume as the night goes on — meaning minimal to no hangover the next morning, which is a great upside and something I've continued practicing. | Recently, my boss asked me to participate in a mocktail testing "meeting." It felt like an odd sign from the universe, so I joined. | During the testing, I learned a few things: - For recipes that call for four or more ingredients, prepare a big batch rather than a single serving to minimize food waste.
- Plain seltzer is fine. When in doubt, choose a flavored version.
- Orange juice is an overwhelming flavor. Start with little splashes before adding more.
- Some mixers and premade nonalcoholic drinks have a fair amount of added sugars, so double-check the nutrition facts.
- Bitters make a big difference!
