| The subject of today's newsletter came to us from a recent Reddit AMA hosted by Healthline Senior Editor and registered dietitian Lisa Valente. One Reddit user wrote, "When I started dating my girlfriend, I had to cut out peanuts/peanut butter because of her nut allergy. I have never really managed to find a good replacement for adding protein to my snacks/lunches where I used to rely on peanut butter (RIP PB/banana sandwiches). Do you have any suggestions for high protein snacks that don't involve peanuts or peanut butter?" | Enjoy Lisa's response below, and keep an eye out for news of future AMAs with our medical experts! | | | | Snack time! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik January 28, 2025 • 3.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | Do you have any suggestions for high protein snacks that don't involve peanuts or peanut butter? | | A: | If it's just a peanut allergy (and not a tree nut allergy), almond butter and banana sandwiches could be a good, close alternative. Almond butter tends to be a little less oily, and although its flavor is distinct from peanut butter, it shares a similar creamy richness. If your girlfriend is allergic to all nuts, you could try sunflower butter, which has a slightly lower protein content than almond and peanut butter but is still pretty good overall at 5.5 grams per serving.
Or, you could skip the nut butter altogether! Greek yogurt is incredibly protein-rich and pairs nicely with other nutrient-dense foods such as fruit, nuts, and seeds.
Another fave: roasted chickpeas! They get really crunchy when you roast or air-fry them, and you can add delicious seasonings like curry powder, cumin, and nutritional yeast. You can also buy them pre-roasted in the snack section of the grocery store. Some other filling and high protein snacks include: - a cheese stick
- cottage cheese
- pumpkin seeds with dried fruit
- sunflower seeds
Although lower in protein, chia seed pudding makes a great high fiber snack. You can easily boost the protein content by adding nuts, seeds, or Greek yogurt. | | | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject? It quickly became one of my staple kitchen items. When it comes to durability, heat retention, and versatility, you can't beat cast iron. I use this Dutch oven mostly for stews and soups on the stovetop, but it's great for the oven too. Pro tip: When baking, put it into the oven while it's cold so that it heats up slowly to reduce the risk of cracking. | | Every product we recommend has gone through either Healthline's or Optum Store's vetting processes.
