| | It can be easy to sink into a perpetually gloomy mood during the cold, dark winter months. So I've developed a highly proactive mindset to managing the winter blues, which includes regularly forcing myself to do things I don't necessarily want to do, in the name of my mental health. | This has led me to a surprisingly simple wintertime self-care practice: I make myself go on walks, even when it's pouring down rain. | Today, I'm here to remind you that comfort is a double-edged sword, and that everyone should own a good pair of rain boots. Enjoy! | | | | Time to bundle up, Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | | |

| | | How I embrace winter by going on rainy walks | Long-time Wellness Wire readers already know how much I love the rain. But an unsaid caveat is that I love watching the rain, usually from within a well-heated, insulated dwelling. The truth is, I'm a sucker for all that is fluffy, dry, and warm. I rarely feel like going outdoors when there's bad weather. | However, as much as I dislike discomfort, I dislike the winter blues more. For me, that shows up as a deep-seated pessimism toward all facets of life. When my mood dips, all the gratitude and joy I normally feel evaporates, and I'm left feeling an all-consuming negativity. Suffice it to say, I find that it's worth it to do what I can to prevent this shift from happening. | I'm not going to pretend that walking around in the rain magically clears up my depression. (The antidepressants I'm on do a far better job at that.) But I also don't want to discredit the impact that simple lifestyle choices can have on my mental health. Making myself pull on my rainboots and leave the solace of my cozy apartment has the short-term effect of resetting my mood, which can often be enough to salvage a day that might otherwise have turned blue. | Over the longer term, I find daily exercise to be incredibly beneficial for my overall mental health. In fact, 2024 research shows that walking (in addition to other forms of exercise) can ease symptoms of depression, and lead to a host of other health benefits. Plus, being outside exposes you to the potentially calming effect of nature. | Walking in the rain is one of my winter balms, but it's also not for everyone. If you live with a health condition that's exacerbated by cold weather, like arthritis, or you're at a higher risk of falling and injuring yourself, it's probably best to let the weather clear before you go outside. | If you do decide to give rain walks a shot, use your common sense and follow safe practices. Here are some precautions to keep in mind: - Dress for the weather: Wear warm clothes and a water-resistant outer layer so your clothes don't soak through.
- Stay home if it's storming: If there are high winds, torrential rain, lightning, or snow, wait until the weather clears up to head outside.
- Choose a short walk: If the weather worsens, you're not too far from your home.
- Go with a buddy: It's better to be safe than sorry!

| | The best bath mat | | | | | SUTERA Stone Bath Mat | Have you ever looked at your soggy bathmat that never fully dries out and thought, "There has to be a better way"? Well, folks, there *is* a better way. This "stone" bath mat is made of diatomaceous earth, which absorbs moisture and then evaporates from the surface. I've used this mat for a whole year, and it's never once soaked through. All I do to clean it is lightly buff the top with a piece of sandpaper every few weeks but otherwise, no cleaning is necessary. It's as close to magic as it gets. | | Every product we recommend has gone through either Healthline's or Optum Store's vetting processes.
