| Like all good coffee drinkers, I wake up each morning eagerly anticipating my first cup of the day. Some call this obsessive, but I would just call it love. But as much as I love coffee, it's not actually the first thing I drink each day. Upon waking, I chug down a few big gulps of water from the glass I leave on my bedside table. It's probably the most refreshing drink of water I take all day. (And it's great for the morning breath!) | Turns out, there may be some evidence-backed reasons for drinking water before — and after — your morning cup of coffee. Below, Lindsay Mahar, a registered dietitian at Healthline and a Wellos Coach, explains why. | | | | Bottoms up! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik December 10, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | Powered by | | | | | | Q: | Should I drink water before coffee? | | A: | While I love starting my day with a giant cup of coffee, it may be best to start the day with water first. In fact, sandwiching your coffee with water is even better. Here's why: - It hydrates you: We lose water while we sleep, so starting the day with a large glass of water helps our bodies rehydrate and helps us feel our best. Yes, coffee counts as water too! But there's a lot less water in a cup of coffee than in a tall glass of H2O.
- It keeps your teeth white: This may be the most important reason for drinking water after coffee. Swishing your mouth with water will help rinse off the tannins in coffee that can stain your teeth.
Water aside, many people find it helpful to drink coffee with breakfast or after eating breakfast. Coffee's acidity can cause upset stomach and trigger gastric reflux symptoms for some, especially on an empty stomach. If this sounds like you, food may lessen the impact.
The bottom line: Stay hydrated by drinking water before reaching for the coffee, and continue to sip (and swish) water afterward. | | | | Written by Lindsay Mahar Wellos Coach and Registered Dietitian | | Wellos optimizes your nutrition and lifestyle by helping you make changes that are easy to manage.
