Wearing socks to bed is good for the soul — and better sleep?!
what's got us buzzing
Wearing socks to bed is good for the soul — and better sleep?!
In the summer, I like to sleep in shorts and a big T-shirt with a fan or A/C blasting, so socks tend to keep my body temperature *just* right through the night. They also reduce my sensory issues. For example, my silky sheets can feel a bit ~too much~ sometimes. From a hygiene standpoint, I hate the idea of bringing dust bunnies from walking barefoot on the floor into bed.️
And maybe the most basic reason of all, wearing socks to bed is just super comfy! But I don't just sleep in any old pair of socks in my dresser drawer. Nope — I actually have specific ones that I save just for bedtime. ️
I typically wear tighter, elastic no-shows during the day then pop on short, thick cotton socks (that sit just below my ankle) or tall, breathable seamless socks (that don't constrict my legs in any way) just before I hop into bed. I firmly believe that the key is to choose a soft material that doesn't restrict circulation or cause you to overheat!️
My anecdotal evidence aside, more research is needed to build the case for sleeping with socks on. But a small 2018 study found solid benefits linked to this behavior, specifically when worn in cooler environments. Compared to the control group who slept barefoot, participants in socks reported falling asleep faster (by 7.5 minutes), sleeping longer (by 32 minutes), and waking up less often (by 7.5x).️
Like the sound of these potential benefits but can't stand the thought of wearing socks to sleep? Here are some alternatives you can try before jumping into bed:
  • soaking your feet in a warm foot bath
  • wearing a warm pair of slippers
  • sleeping with a blanket over the foot of your bed
