| Supporting immune health, regulating digestion, easing symptoms of depression — many people swear by the health benefits of probiotics. You may be one of these people! | While more and more research suggests the importance of gut health to overall health, the benefits of taking probiotics still remain unclear. Many factors affect the outcome of taking these popular supplements, including what it is you're trying to treat and the type of bacteria included in the pill. Lisa Valente, our friend and a registered dietitian at Healthline, goes into this and more below. | | | | Hope this helps! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik June 25, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | Is a probiotic right for me? | | A: | Probiotics are good-for-you bacteria that may have health benefits. As a refresher, trillions of bacteria live in your gut, and making sure those bugs are happy is a key part of gut health. Our guts affect our overall physical and mental health, so being interested in probiotics makes sense.
But while gut health is super important, taking probiotic supplements isn't the best choice for everyone. Their effectiveness will depend on the strain, the dose, and the condition you're looking to treat. If you're having symptoms and feel like a probiotic supplement would help, make sure to speak with your doctor or a dietitian first. Not only are these supplements expensive, but they can actually cause digestive symptoms if they're taken unnecessarily or incorrectly.
Research suggests that probiotics may have benefits for gastrointestinal conditions (diarrhea, constipation), immune health, weight management, and mood regulation. You can also get probiotics from fermented foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, and miso.
After you talk with your doctor about probiotics, remember to take care of your gut health in other ways as well, such as: - eating a variety of fiber-rich foods
- managing your stress levels
- getting enough sleep
- drinking plenty of water
- limiting added sugar and ultra-processed foods
