Sodium is an essential nutrient, meaning your body needs it to function properly. But as with all things, balance and moderation are key. Eating too much added salt raises the risks of high blood pressure, kidney disease, and stroke. Possibly diabetes, too, according to recent research.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 milligrams per day, which is equal to about 1 teaspoon of salt. Most Americans consume nearly double that amount, primarily from processed foods.
But what about when it comes to the contents of your salt shaker? Sea salt, kosher salt, Himalayan salt — what is the actual difference between these grainy taste-makers? You may be surprised to learn that, nutritionally speaking, there isn't a meaningful difference between types of salts.
While it's true that sea salt and Himalayan salt contain trace minerals, the concentrations are so low that the amount you sprinkle onto your food isn't going to affect your overall nutrient intake.
The main difference between varieties of salt actually comes down to their taste and culinary usage. Let's break down some of these key facts ...
🧂 Table salt is the most common type. It's made from mined rock salt, sometimes with additives like iodine or anti-caking agents that stop it from clumping together.
🌊 Sea salt is produced by evaporating seawater and contains trace minerals that add flavor. Recently, there has been some concern about microplastics making their way into sea salt, and there is some evidence for that.
🥒 Kosher salt has a coarse texture and is perfect for curing meat or sprinkling on food at the table. It lacks antibacterial iodine, so it's the type of salt most often used for lactofermentation and pickling foods.
⛰️ Himalayan pink salt is mined from ancient sea beds and contains rusty iron oxide that gives it a rosy hue.
