| | Week of 01/03/2019 - Featured Blog Post This is What it Took to Reach My Goal I had a big surprise this morning. My blood sugar reading was exactly where I wanted it to be at 97. I have been controlling Type II Diabetes (T2D) with food and exercise. I've had occasional days near 100, but this was different. I had not done anything outstanding. I had eaten a healthy diet, and I had walked 12K steps. This is my healthy "good". I had a 3-hour drive to visit my mother, and the time in the car could get me off my game. I worked hard getting in those steps even in the rain! How do I feel today? Amazing! Why? I've worked on this goal for 10 years. I've had a lot to learn about how to eat and the exercise that I need to to keep T2D under control. I've tried a lot of "all or nothing at all" attempts to control it. What I needed to do was make small, consistent changes. I had to make my health a priority. It's working! I realize that this is a life-long journey and a life-long commitment, but if that's what it takes, that's what I'll do! 1. Set Specific Goals. I want to control T2D with food, exercise, and medication if needed. 2. Set Measurable Goals. I measure my glucose levels every morning, track my food and exercise every day. 3. Set Attainable Goals. Every day, I walk at least 10K steps. I eat a low carb diet every day, and twice a week, I use intermittent fasting by delaying breakfast by an hour. 4. Set Relevant Goals. My health depends on T2D being under control. 5. Set Time-Bound Goals. This is a goal that I may be working on for the rest of my life. I am committed to keeping T2D under control. SparkPeople has made the difference in taking my dreams and making them a reality. Thanks, Spark!
