| This Week's Tip A diabetic-friendly alternative to artificial sweeteners
When you're watching your intake of carbohydrates and trying to keep your blood glucose in control, sugar may be one of the first foods to go. But there is an alternative to sugarand artificial sweetenersthat is safe for people with diabetes and can still allow you to indulge your sweet tooth. It's called sugar alcohol because chemically, it's similar to both sugar and alcohol.
But in reality, sugar alcohols are neither a sugar nor an alcohol. Commonly found in low-carb and even "diabetic-friendly" foods, sugar alcohols are absorbed more slowly (and incompletely) by the body. Unlike regular sugar, they require little or no insulin for metabolism. So are sugar alcohols right for you?
