Hi Everyone
Last week, I shared a fun story about the most underrated things in life. Here is a link to that email if you missed it.
This week, I'll feature an exciting video shared with me by a longtime SparkPeople member (thanks Frances!)
First, as all of you know, I'm a big fan of consistent exercise. Integrating consistent exercise with goal-setting was the key to transforming my life and the lives of so many other people here at SparkPeople. Eventually, we added many other areas of life to this program, but exercise is a foundational element even if you start with small amounts -- even as little as 10 minutes.
This video is a great reinforcer for these beliefs because it's a talk by a down-to-earth neuroscientist named Wendy Suzuki. Because of my allergies and other issues, I'm a big fan of neuroscience because it helps explain practical benefits of certain actions for your brain.
It's fun sharing this video because this is like bringing in a guest brain expert! The video is about 15 minutes long. I figure learning how you can protect your brain is worth the time it take to watch about half of a sitcom episode :).
Wendy does a great job showing the incredible benefits of physical activity on your brain. She even uses herself as an example talking about how her life was miserable until she started doing consistent physical activity. You'll see in the video that now she's really into this and is passionate about getting people out of their seats and into action.
In this talk, Wendy shows that exercise leads to these benefits to your brain:
- A single workout causes your brain to releases neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. These neurotransmitters improve mood, sleep, and much more.
- Exercise helps your body create new brain cells!
- Exercise increases your reaction time
- Exercise improves long-term memory
- Exercise improves attention and focus
- Most transformative is the protective effects on your brain. This means that exercise helps push off diseases like Alzheimer's disease!
So what happens if we can also push off people from even getting this dreaded disease in the first place?!
As Wendy shows, exercise could be a big part of this solution!!
I can attest to so many of these benefits. For example, my fitness program has been great, so I think faster and type faster -- making it more efficient to complete many tasks. This is an example that exercise doesn't have to take a lot of time because it makes you so efficient at many other tasks.
What are your thoughts on this? If you leave her a message on my blog, I'll see if I can share these messages with her to thank her for her inspiring words!
If this motivates you to take action, my free mini-book shares the easiest possible program to help you turn exercise into a lifelong healthy habit in a fun way.
