| | At the beginning of this year, I made a commitment to myself to get back on track with a healthy lifestyle. I had taken about a year off from regular exercising and also being mindful of what I ate. The excuses were: chronic lower back pain that would get worse after physical activity. Being laid off from a job I loved, moving across the country, looking for work (fighting frustration and depression) for a good 8 months and rebuilding and starting fresh friendships in the new town. On and on those excuses went. Aside from getting fed up with being physically inactive and feeling like a marshmallow after all that time of not taking great care of myself, my main driving factor was that I wanted to be able to enjoy hiking again without experiencing pain. So in January I started being more mindful of what I was eating, coming back to my old SparkPeople account and logging, and then I started to gradually increase my physical activity. Gradual was an important step here. I knew if I tried to go full-bore, I'd hurt myself and get discouraged. Basically just got myself used to working out consistently. As time moved forward, I increased the challenge - did full workouts instead of just half, increased my step height, increased my weight selections, selected more challenging workouts, etc. I am not finished by far, but I can say that the wonderful results I've seen thus far are: - A 10-pound weight loss - Increased energy - Better sleep - Better self-esteem - Back pain never comes around (because I keep on top of my prescribed exercises/stretches) - My knee pain is gone! (I also take precautions and use trekking poles on the downhill portion of hikes.) I just love seeing how the body can adapt and improve - and really in very little time. I'm feeling quite encouraged today and really feeling an even greater appreciation of my body and what it can do for me if I just ask it and support it with healthy food and physical activity.
