How to prevent exercise-related hypoglycemia

This Week's Tip

How to prevent exercise-related hypoglycemia
For people with diabetes, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is a risk that can happen during exercise, right after exercise, or even up to 24 hours after you finish exercising. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can be mild and gradual; but it is more common that symptoms come on very quickly. By paying close attention to how you're feeling, you can prevent problems before they put you at risk of injury.

You should always check your blood glucose level before you exercise. Depending on your reading and the workout you're about to do, you can eat a snack containing carbohydrates before exercise to help prevent hypoglycemia. We created the following chart to determine what to do based on your pre-exercise blood glucose levels.
