| You know that one item in your kitchen you find yourself using at least once a day? For me, it's my meticulously seasoned 12-inch cast-iron skillet. It's my go-to pan, and I'd be totally lost without it. Recently, I took this question to our fabulous squad of registered dietitians. Their responses did not disappoint, and I'm excited to share them with you today. | | | | Hope you find some inspiration! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik December 31, 2024 • 4 min read | | | | | | Q: | What's the most underrated kitchen tool in an RD's home? Let's find out! | | A: | "High quality kitchen shears! Literally use them almost every day!" — Leah Maschino, MBA, RDN
"Immersion blender! I don't know if it's underrated, but I'm not sure if many people have one. It's an easy way to blend soups and sauces without having to transfer to a blender or food processor. I love it for making homemade salad dressings, blending up a quick smoothie in a mason jar, or even blending some fruit into pancake batter! It's so easy to use, and you can detach the blade and clean it in the dishwasher." — Jessica Sandoz, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCES
"While most people have a knife set in their kitchen, it is important to have a knife set with various types of knives and a knife sharpener, which is underrated. Using a paring knife for everything is ineffective and can be dangerous! Using dull knives can also lead to more injuries than a sharpened knife. When a knife is sharp, you'll likely be more careful using it, and your knife will work more effectively, allowing you to put less effort and force into the cuts." — Kirsten Seele, MFN, RD, LD, NBC-HWC
"Tongs! I have two longer sets plus one tiny version in my kitchen drawer. You can almost use them for everything: flipping meat, grabbing pasta for your bowl, tossing your salads, picking up roasted veggies, flipping bread over under the toaster, picking fruits out of a bowl (and if it's mixed fruit, tongs make it easier to grab the ones you want — yes, I'm one of those people). I could go on and on …" — Annie Hibbs, CPPM, MS, RD, LD
"Probably the salad spinner. If you want to save a little money by chopping and washing your own lettuce, the salad spinner removes so much water. It's really an essential tool for keeping your greens fresh." — Lindsay Mahar, MS, RDN, Wellos Coach
"The zester! Specifically, I love my Microplane zester — it's thin, easy to hold, and comes in multiple colors. I'm pretty sure I use it every day, or at least almost every day. As someone who loves ginger and garlic but doesn't love mincing them, the zester has become my must-have tool. I also regularly use it to shred hard cheeses and, naturally, to zest lemons, limes, and oranges. If you haven't tried adding citrus zest to your rice yet, you really should!" — Kelli McGrane, MS, RD
"A good spatula*! My personal mission for the latter half of 2023 was finding the perfect spatula for my needs. My dream spatula needed to be silicone, thin enough to flip pancakes (pancake Sundays have been and always will be a tradition in my family!), and strong enough to flip whatever else we eat. Even though we now have six meh spatulas, we also have one that I am always stoked to use." — Mohini Bhakta, MBA, RDN, CDCES | | *Editor's note: Although "spatula" is the more commonly used term, Mohini is actually referring to a turner. | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
