| I grew up in an ACV household (for the uninitiated, that's apple cider vinegar). ACV was the first line of defense against throat tickles, coughs, or any other mild cold and flu symptoms. (For the record, we always went to the doctor for fevers and more severe symptoms.) | I didn't bring ACV-as-medicine with me into adulthood. But since I started working at Healthline, I've noticed just how popular ACV continues to be with readers. Despite the lack of scientific evidence, people consistently find it to be a powerful and useful "wellness" ingredient. And with that in mind, we brought back Annie Hibbs, a registered dietitian, to give us more insight into the benefits (and myths) surrounding ACV. | | | | Enjoy! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik September 26, 2024 • 3.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | What are the actual benefits of apple cider vinegar? | | A: | ACV is often touted as a cure-all. Claims that it can decrease blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels and help you lose weight circulate across the internet and social media. But as with so many viral health trends these days, there simply isn't enough research to fully back up those claims — at this time, at least.
The studies that have been conducted are either too small, inconclusive, or done with animals, and the findings haven't been confirmed in humans. There's also a need for longer-term studies to understand the lasting impacts of ACV on human health.
ACV doesn't contain many vitamins or minerals, but depending on the brand and production process, certain ACVs may contain amino acids and antioxidants. Here are some other benefits of ACV: - It aids in food preservation: By making the food more acidic (think: pickles, sauerkraut, etc.), it deactivates enzymes and kills bacteria that could cause food spoilage.
- It adds tasty flavor to foods: ACV can be a great addition to salad dressings, marinades, sauces, chutneys, and other recipes.
If you do decide to use ACV, consider following these best practices: - Don't use it in place of medications: In fact, it's probably a good idea to talk with your doctor before adding it to your routine.
- Dilute it: Shoot for a ratio of 1 tablespoon of ACV to 8 ounces of water. ACV is highly acidic — drinking it undiluted can damage your teeth's enamel and the tissue in your mouth, your esophagus, and the rest of the piping that leads to your stomach.
Overall, drinking (diluted) ACV is unlikely to cause you harm, but there's little evidence showing that it can treat specific symptoms or health conditions. As always, it's a good idea to take supposed cure-alls with a grain of salt. | | | Annie Hibbs, Registered Dietitian | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
