In a Nutshell
Aside from having to feed my hungry cat, coffee is what inspires me to drag myself out of bed each morning. But before I enjoy my freshly brewed cup of morning motivation, I need to eat breakfast. If I don't, I feel super jittery, anxious, and disconnected from my hunger cues most of the day.
On the other hand, most people I know can't function without having 1 or 3 cups immediately after they wake up. So, today, I pose two questions: Am I just a sensitive baby who can't handle caffeine without food? And is there any harm in drinking coffee on an empty stomach? Let's discuss.

Is drinking coffee on an empty stomach bad for you?
From how much you should consume to the best time to drink it, myths swirl around caffeine do's and don'ts like freshly steamed milk in a cup of espresso.️
As far as timing is concerned, some research suggests that coffee will probably affect your health the same way no matter when you take your first sip. In fact, there's very little evidence to support a link between serious issues and drinking coffee, aside from possibly disrupting your sleep if you have it too late in the day.️
It is true that when there's nothing else in your gut, anything you ingest — coffee, supplements, or otherwise — typically absorbs into your system more quickly. In the case of coffee, this could increase stomach acid, which may cause heartburn or acid reflux symptoms (mainly among people with sensitive stomachs). It may also speed up coffee-induced bowel movements, so you might have to run to the bathroom sooner than usual.
Beyond the bean itself, what you add to your cup matters! For example, mixing in cow milk can lead to stomach aches, bloating, or diarrhea in people who are lactose intolerant. Higher caffeine counts may also affect you differently. Maybe an iced cold brew is too strong for you and causes jitters but an iced latte feels just right.️
So, back to the big question: Should you drink coffee on an empty stomach? As long as you feel good doing it, keep on keeping on! It turns out I am just sensitive to caffeine, and there's no real harm in enjoying your morning cup before eating.️️
If you experience a racing heartbeat, jitters, increased anxiety, or restlessness doing it, you may have a caffeine sensitivity like me. In this case, consider having your first cup alongside breakfast or waiting until after you've eaten and see if you notice a difference.️️

YETI Rambler 14 oz. Stackable Cup
YETI Rambler 14 oz. Stackable Cup
Everyone is obsessed with Stanley Cups, and that's great, but I'm still loyal to my OG YETI. Healthline gifted the Rambler cup to me after I presented at a big meeting a couple of years back, and it's still going strong! The MagSlider lid isn't spill-proof, but it does a great job keeping drinks super hot or ice cold. This cup comes in different sizes — I have the 14-ounce and 30-ounce, and I love them both dearly.
