| There is truly no food I love more than ice cream, and eating it ranks pretty high on the list of things I love about life. It's not like I sit around feeling guilty about all that sweet, cold goodness, but I do make efforts to be a bit mindful: eating smaller servings, avoiding toppings, and, on occasion, exploring different types and variations of ice cream. | So I could relate when we got this question in our inbox: Is dairy-free ice cream any better for you, nutritionally, than the old-fashioned kind? Leah Maschino, a registered dietitian at Healthline, answers this question in depth below. | | | | Hope this helps! Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik July 4, 2024 • 3.5 min read | | | | | | Q: | Is dairy-free ice cream actually better for you? | | A: | The answer that no one ever wants to hear: It depends!
That's because dairy-free ice cream comes in many different formulations. The actual nutritional content (and how it may affect your health) varies widely depending on the ingredients included. For example, some plant-based options are lower in saturated fats, calories, and/or sugars. But others can be higher. Just because something is plant-based doesn't automatically mean it's healthier!
If you're looking for the best ice cream for you, I first suggest identifying what nutrients you're looking to increase and/or decrease in your overall diet. Then take a look at those ingredients and compare different options to find the best option for you. For example, if you want to limit animal-based proteins or you're lactose intolerant, a plant-based ice cream may be a great alternative. It's also important to be aware that different flavors will have differences in nutritional content, even if you're looking at the same brand.
Still want to enjoy your favorite ice cream but worried about it affecting your health? Try limiting your serving size and how often you are buying and eating it — moderation is key! You can also add some extra nutritional value — plus texture and flavor — to your bowl by topping it with fruits or nuts. | | | | Want to learn more about food, diets, cooking, or some other nutrition subject?
