In a Nutshell
I grew up disrupting classrooms with loud stomach gurgles. I belch all the time. And my belly blows up like a balloon after I eat, before my period, and most other days for unknown reasons. (Yes, I'm planning to see a gastroenterologist soon.)
Until I secure more personalized care, I'm taking advantage of my job here at Healthline by researching what causes bloating and which remedies can help. Below, I share my findings with you, of course!

Bloating causes and remedies to try
Bloating refers to a tight, swollen feeling in your abdomen. It often happens when your gastrointestinal (GI) tract fills with air or gas, but some people use bloating to describe feeling full of food and liquid as well. Although it's totally natural, bloating can be uncomfortable and even painful.️
Hormone changes, digestive issues, and certain medical conditions like endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) are all common causes that can lead to excess air in your gut. Then there are sneakier contributing factors too, such as:️️
  • stress
  • eating certain foods like onions, garlic, or apples
  • drinking through a straw
  • drinking while eating
  • chewing gum
  • wearing loose dentures
If unbuttoning your pants doesn't help and you're looking for speedy relief, there are many ways to beat bloat quickly. You can try going for a light walk after eating, taking peppermint capsules, drinking herbal teas, or massaging your belly. Pepto Bismol chewables almost always help me feel better, too — I keep my purse and medicine cabinet stocked at all times.
So, when should you see a doctor? If remedies don't help, your bloating lasts for days or weeks, and you experience other symptoms like diarrhea, weight loss, or trouble eating, then you may want to speak with a gastroenterologist to figure out if you have an underlying health condition. Depending on the root cause, a long-term management plan might include food logging, changing your diet, taking medication, or trying different supplements.️

"There are many excellent apps that can be useful while in nature that can enhance the experience. Merlin has an app for identifying birds, and there are apps that can be used to identify plants."
