Ginger Wojcik Newsletter Editor, Healthline | | | Written by Ginger Wojcik January 9, 2024 • 3 min read | | | | | | Q: | What is monk fruit sugar, and is it a healthy alternative to processed sugar? | | A: | Monk fruit sweetener is one of the nine Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved non-nutritive sweeteners, meaning it has no calories and no sugar and will not cause elevations in blood sugar. It's also considered to be more natural than some of the other artificial substitutes, as it is extracted from plants.
While monk fruit itself contains fructose and glucose, these sugars are removed during the process of making monk fruit sweetener. Instead, this sugar alternative gets its sweetness from mogrosides, a unique type of antioxidants that are 200–300 times sweeter than regular sugar.
Only a handful of human studies have looked into the potential health effects of monk fruit sweetener. Still, the FDA recognized its safety in 2010, and monk fruit has been used traditionally for centuries.
