What is pH?๐ฉ๐ฌ Science content ahead! pH measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a water-based solution. When you pour a glass of water (H2O), some molecules will break in half into an H ion and an OH ion. In pure water, there are an equal number of H's and OH's, so we call water neutral and define that as pH of 7.๐ฆ When you add something acidic to the water, it binds to some of those OH's floating around, leaving more H than OH; that lowers the pH, so acidic things have a pH of lower than 7. And, vice versa, if you add something alkaline, it binds to some of the H's, leaving a smaller concentration of H's floating around and a correspondingly high pH (between 7 and 14). Why does it matter for skincare?๐งช Your skin is naturally acidic - between 4.5-6, depending on location, time of day, etc. An acidic pH is crucial for your skin's health, since a lot of its biological functions only work at a specific pH. Using products with an alkaline pH (that is, a pH above 7) can cause certain enzymes in your skin to not perform well, leading to issues like a damaged skin barrier and increased breakouts. It's important that every step of your skincare routine has a pH of 7 or below. Should I freak out?๐คฏ Not at all! Fortunately, there are only really 2 types of skincare products that may be alkaline: Cleansers - bar soap is made with a strong alkaline ingredient like lye, so bar soaps are often high pH. Many liquid cleansers also use high-pH surfactants for their cleansing power and foaming abilities. Your cleanser is the most important step to double-check the pH. (Our Velvet Cleansing Milk has a skin-loving pH of 5.0-5.5.) Clay masks - bentonite clay has a naturally high pH, so that particular type of clay mask can irritate the skin. Kaolin clay has an acidic pH, so that's generally the safer choice for skin. And if you're really worried about it, just stick with Stratia: all our products are between pH 3.4-6.5 in order to support a healthy acid mantle.❤️ -Alli Founder & Formulator, Stratia Skin | | | | |
