Learn why I hate mold and you should too

SparkPeopleHello from Sparkguy

Sometimes even my positivity is tested, believe it or not :).

We are doing a remodel of our house, so we are currently living in a rental for about 6 months during the remodel.

About 6 weeks ago, our lead contractor said he needed to show us something. As they were doing demolition for the remodel, they discovered a big patch of mold caused by a roof leak.

There is a glitch now and I can't add the photo to my email, but there is one on this page.

This mold was about 15 feet from my bed. Not good. Strangely, there was no mark on the ceiling, so it must have been a very small leak.

This helped us connect some interesting dots. Our contractor talked about how if water is not present, mold can go dormant and not present a big problem. In California, we can go 6+ months without rain, so I think that's what happened with this mold.

But, right after the first rain of the season, all four of us had some form of health issues. I had trouble sleeping and started snoring, my wife had some breathing issues, and both of our kids had breathing issues.

I can trace exactly when this rain happened because it was right at the end of the big wildfire we had in Northern California so I knew the date.

At first, I thought maybe the terrible air from the wildfires was giving us some issues, but now it's almost surely from the mold getting activated after the rains started.

Since mold is a form of fungus, I tell people to think about how challenging it can be to get rid of athlete's foot, and that is right there on the outside of your body.

Mold can be a lot more challenging because you breathe mold spores into your sinuses and lungs, which can then cause all kinds of issues.

So yea, about 6 weeks into recovering from brain surgery, I get exposed to mold. That's a bad double-whammy!

The fortunate/unfortunate part of this is that I've had this happen in the past after we lived in a moldy house in Cincinnati. It took a long time, but I learned some good things to do for mold treatment.

The big point of me sharing this story is that if you have mold in your home or any type of leak that could lead to mold, take it seriously because it really could kill you, or lead to very serious health issues if left untreated. Be especially wary if any part of your roof is a flat roof. Both of our homes that have had mold issues had a partially flat roof.

I've done a good amount of research on this and mold exposure is a dramatically underestimated health issue. Even the Mayo Clinic reports that mold causes most cases of chronic sinusitis and that this is the most common chronic disease in the U.S. They say 37 million people in the U.S. alone have chronic sinusitis.

On the positive side, I had a great week. Today I hung out with my boys and my brother. We did a 90-minute hike and had a tasty ice cream as a treat afterwards. Let me know any highlights you had this week on my blog.
