Each and every one of us has our own unique strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and shortcomings--so why is it that we feel the need to compare our progress to that of other people? You and you alone know how hard you're training, so why let an arbitrary benchmark such as being able to do the splits or running a mile discourage your progress if you aren't able to achieve it? Standing on one leg in full tree pose? I do that while I'm talking on the phone. Touching my toes? I'm 5'2'', so no problem. Backbend? Feels great. The splits? That's another story. Even when I was pretty serious into gymnastics, I could never reach a full split and I've not gotten any closer as I've gotten older. In yoga class, I always cringe when we go into the runner's lunge pose. Not being able to get into the pose always feels like I'm failing and everyone is watching. But it has nothing to do with my ability--no, it has to do with the length of my hamstrings and hip flexors and how my body is built.
