"Fitness is not about being better; it's about being better than you used to be." I'm a competitive person. I have three brothers, making competition practically a necessity. This competitiveness extends to all areas of my life--intramural sports, kayaking down a river, Trivial Pursuit, guessing who's going to win the various Academy Awards. Suffice it to say, it extends to exercise, too. Or, at least, it used to. I used to panic when I wasn't keeping up in exercise classes, wondering why I couldn't run as fast as the girl next to me or feeling frustrated that the guy at the front of yoga class is able to contort his leg in that way that mine just won't go. At a certain point, I realized that exercise is a competition between just me, myself and I. My body is able to do exactly what it needs to do right now at that moment and forcing it to match the capabilities of someone else only leads to frustration. Remember that in the gym, on the track or in your home, your best is up to you and only you, so work to make yourself proud.
