Have a little faith in yourself

SparkPeopleHello from Sparkguy

Hi Everyone

Can you believe it's almost March? Yikes!

In addition to regularly participating in the SparkPeople community, I started posting on Reddit every now and then (you can follow me at this link if you happen to use this site). It's fun to try to help other people not involved in SparkPeople.

I thought I'd share an interaction on Reddit from earlier today.

Original Post It doesn't take much to go from "having little faith in yourself" to "having a little faith in yourself."

Comment on Original Post Nah, that's just snappy semantics. I struggled for years trying to work out how to get from the former to the latter. For many it is a huge leap to make, and non-linear.

My Response to Comment You're right this is often a much more challenging leap than it appears. I found the key was to set and reach the smallest goals possible (do 10 minutes of exercise; eat one healthy food; work on a specific task for 10 minutes, get support with a quick conversation, etc.). And I mean literally writing those goals down, doing them, and then moving them to a success area as much as you can.

When you do this enough, it can transform your life by: building your confidence that you can reach goals; letting you think big picture about why you want to reach goals (and this may change over time); if you are reaching nutrition and fitness goals, that will transform your body.

This is how I overcame social anxiety and turned the chasm you mention into small steps to make this post correct :). I like sharing because it's a replicable process that can work for most people trying to reach most types of goals.

This is a big reason why I'm such a fan of the combination of:
  1. Writing down small goals/tasks
  2. Doing those goals/tasks
  3. Moving those to a success/completed area
I know for major goals like losing a lot of weight or overcoming depression it might seem like you could never make this happen. But I know from personal experience of overcoming anxiety that this process truly does work -- especially if you use all areas of life that are integrated into the SparkPeople Fuel for Improvement System. And this includes using this process to get professional help if needed as part of reaching your goals.

If you'd like to read more about exactly how I still do this on a daily basis, here is a short article on my daily planning process.

I consider this the "backbone" of my work to reach goals (and have fun!) each day.

Let me know what you think about this on this blog.
